Aspirin is a salicylate NSAID and has many properties in common with non-aspirin NSAIDs. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties; it acts as inhibitor of the enzyme cyclo-oxygenase, which results in the direct inhibition of the biosynthesis of prostaglandin and thromboxanes from arachidonic acid. Aspirin also inhibits platelet aggregation; non-acetylated
salicylates do not.
