The common cold and cough often go together. This is because cough is one of the symptoms of the common cold. Other cold symptoms include sore throat, sneezing, runny or clogged nose, fever, headache, earache, body aches, loss of appetite, and fatigue.

The common cold is the most frequently occurring viral infection in the world, and a leading cause of doctor visits and absences from school and work. It is a self-limiting infection that you can generally manage at home. The goal is to relieve symptoms and make yourself as comfortable as possible. Here are some home remedies for the common cold and cough:

Stay in bed and rest. Your body needs rest to fight off the infection and heal. Most people with a common cold recover in about 7 to 10 days.

Stay hydrated and sip warm liquids. Drink lots of water, juice, or warm lemon water with honey. Sip clear broth, chicken soup, or warm apple juice. Increased fluid intake helps loosen congestion and prevents dehydration. Avoid alcohol, coffee and caffeinated sodas, which can make dehydration worse.

Relieve nasal congestion. Over-the-counter (OTC) decongestants, antihistamines, and saline nasal drops and sprays can help relieve stuffiness and congestion.

Soothe sore throat. Dissolve ¼ to ½ teaspoon salt in an 8-ounce glass of warm water. A saltwater gargle can temporarily soothe your sore throat. You can also try throat lozenges and throat sprays, or menthol candy. Soothing your sore throat may also help soothe your cough.

Take OTC cough medicine. Expectorants help loosen mucus so you can cough it up more easily. Cough suppressants reduce your urge to cough. If you’re not sure which kind is right for you, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take OTC fever and pain medicine. Acetaminophen, paracetamol, ibuprofen, and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can help relieve fever, sore throat, headache, and body aches.

Consult your doctor if symptoms persist or if your cold and cough get worse.
